These New Seascapes are the result of Victor Gounel’s recent studies on the transient nature of motion. Dynamic brush strokes dive into viscous oil colors and create a turbulent surface. The viewer is confronted with a liquid force field of sinuous flows, sometimes dissipating into dripping-patterns. The textural lushness of the paintings – its at times barricade-like layering of waves – can be seen as attempts to recoil from the boundlessness and mutability of the sea. In this new series, Victor Gounel attempts to capture different modes of movement and impermanence by occupying a hybrid space in which moments of romantic infinitism are traversed by finite moves and gestures drawn from contemporary dance and politics.
